School taught me many things. I learnt how to add up, speak English properly; I studied a couple of useful modern languages as well as some interesting but useless ancient ones. I learnt about capital cities and rock formations but sadly to say I never learnt the rudiments of business at my school and this is something I have had to pick up myself with varying degrees of success.
Whilst I landed a job as a business person and was quite successful in this role for many years, it is quite a different case in point when you are negotiating or marketing as a job and when you are doing it for yourself.
My main priority in all these years has been how to provide for my retirement and while this is still some way off, it is a never ending quest. What is the best way to go about it? Property? Very tempting to buy a leaseback in France or a property in Italy and it is still something to be considered.
How about investments? I never quite got the hang of these and while I have scraped through with my initial small investments, they never quite found the oil wells that were needed to make them truly viable.
Two things I have learned though, is firstly, that you have to rely on yourself and secondly that there is no getting rich quick.
